Tuesday 17th March – Ski ***** sunny – Sommand to Praz de Lys
25.46 n miles – 39.96 knots – 5 hours
Gloriously sunny day and we had five glorious hours up on the pistes skiing
between Sommand and Praz de Lys:) We managed to be ready and up on the
lift at 9.30 – not bad as we had to drive down from Roche Pallud and buy
our four hour lift pass for 47 euros for both of us including insurance,
before we started. We covered most of the area and the pistes were amazing
this morning – the piste basher driver deserves a medal – so smooth and
no joins to bump over:) We went up to the highest point Haut Fleury
(1980m) and made the most of the beautiful view – 360 degrees of alpine
splendour! The table of orientation pointed out all the peaks and places
we knew like Les Gets/Morzine, Samoens/Morrillon etc.. We could also look
over Lac Leman at the Jura where we were a couple of weeks ago. It’s a
shame about the pollution haze over the lake - from Geneva I suppose:( The
run down from the highest point is called the lake and goes past Lac Roy on
the way down to the very bottom of Praz de Lys. Really long run and
although getting a bit stodgy by lunch time it was still great! We made
our way back over to the Sommand pistes as our 4 hours was drawing to a
close and went up a long drag lift to eat our lunch just as our time limit
past:) We sat at the same point as I walked to yesterday and looked down
on Roche Pallud and over to the high alps:) There was even a compost
toilet up there! We skied down and the piste we were on didn’t quite
make it to the car park so we had to shuffle but it gave us a chance to
watch the kids having cross country skiing lessons – typical, the small
ones were loving it and very enthusiastic but the nearly teenagers were
cutting across the off piste back to the bus!! We packed up quickly and
drove back up to Roche Pallud to our favourite parking place and had a very
relaxed afternoon. We walked up to the cross and down onto the piste just
before the sunset. Great day – even saw a rabbit disappearing into the
woods near the van on the way back:)
Sad day, I think my poor old camera is on its last legs:( Much loved and
much abused!!! I take it everywhere, cycling, skiing, hiking –
everything! It could be a trip to e-bay when we get home.
